You’ve surely heard about “artificial intelligence” in the news, at work or over dinner. To many it sounds like a science-fiction movie: robots, thinking machines, a distant future. The truth is much closer and far less threatening. AI is already part of your daily life, and learning to use it to your advantage is simpler than you imagine.
What is artificial intelligence?
In simple words, artificial intelligence is a set of programs that learn from many examples in order to help us with tasks. They don’t “think” like a person: they recognize patterns. It’s like a very fast assistant who has read millions of texts and can now help you write, summarize, translate or answer questions.
A simple analogy: when you learned to recognize a relative’s face, it was because you saw it many times. AI does something similar, but with enormous amounts of information. That’s why it can suggest the next word as you type, or recognize a song in seconds.
Tools you already use without knowing it
Before thinking about “new” tools, it’s worth realizing how many you use every day without noticing. AI has been quietly working for you for a while:
- The predictive keyboard on your phone, which guesses the word you’re about to type.
- The GPS that calculates the fastest route based on the traffic at that moment.
- The recommendations on Netflix or YouTube, which suggest what to watch based on what you’ve already seen.
- The email spam filter, which sets aside junk messages without you doing anything.
If all that already feels natural, then AI is not foreign to your life. All that’s left is to take the step of using it more consciously and getting even more out of it.
AI tools you can use today
These are some of the best known and most accessible. Most have a free version that is more than enough to get started:
- ChatGPT and similar assistants. They’re useful for asking questions, writing messages, summarizing long texts, generating ideas or explaining something difficult in simple words. It’s like having someone to talk to in order to solve doubts.
- Canva with AI. It helps you create images, posters or posts by writing in your own words what you want, without needing design skills.
- Google Translate. It translates texts, whole pages and even what you hear, with ever better accuracy thanks to AI.
- Voice assistants. Like those on your phone or smart speakers, to set alarms, look up information or control your home just by speaking.
The secret to using them well is to dare to try and to ask for things clearly, as if you were talking to a person. The more specific you are, the better it will respond.
AI doesn’t replace people, it empowers them
It’s normal to have some fear. “Will this leave me without a job?”, “Will I be able to understand it?”. The best way to think about it is this: artificial intelligence is a tool, and like any tool, it’s worth what you do with it. It doesn’t replace your judgment, your experience or your way with people. What it does is save you time on the repetitive so you can focus on what matters.
Those who learn to use these tools don’t compete with technology: they put it to work for them.
