If you use your phone to send WhatsApp messages and little else, this text is for you. Maybe you feel the digital world is something only younger people understand, or that you missed the train. Nothing could be further from the truth. Technology is not a gift you are born with: it is a tool you learn, step by step, just as you once learned to drive, to cook or to do anything else that today comes to you without thinking.
The hardest part is almost never the computer. The hardest part is daring to start. So let’s take the mystery out of it and show you where to begin, simply and clearly.
Where do I begin?
You don’t need to learn everything at once. It’s enough to master a few basics that will later open many doors. If you had to order your first steps, they would be these:
- Get familiar with the browser. It’s the program you use to access the internet (Chrome, Edge or Firefox). Learn to type an address, open several tabs and go back. It’s your gateway to almost everything.
- Create an email account. Having your own email (for example, on Gmail) is like having a digital ID: you’ll need it to sign up almost anywhere, get appointments, do paperwork or look for work.
- Search on Google. Type what you need in your own words. Don’t know how to do something? Try typing “how to + what you want to do.” You’ll find explanations in text and video.
- Use basic tools. Save a file, take a screenshot, adjust the volume, connect to Wi-Fi. They are small gestures that, once you do them, you won’t forget.
A tip: practice without fear. The computer won’t break from pressing the wrong button. Making mistakes is, in fact, the fastest way to learn.
Free tools to get started
You don’t need to spend a cent to begin. There are plenty of free, easy-to-use resources that can accompany you from day one:
- Google Docs. To write letters, résumés or whatever you need, without installing anything and with your files saved automatically.
- Canva. To make posters, invitations or nice posts by choosing ready-made templates. Easier than it looks.
- YouTube. The best free school in the world. There are tutorials for absolutely everything, explained patiently and at your own pace.
- Learning apps. From languages to finance, there are apps designed to learn a little each day, without pressure.
You don’t need to be young to learn
There’s a myth worth throwing in the trash: that technology “is for young people.” The reality is that thousands of adults start from scratch every year and manage perfectly. Learning to use digital tools doesn’t depend on age; it depends on practice and the right support.
Think about the concrete: a 50-year-old who learns to sell their products on social media, someone who can finally do paperwork without relying on their children, or someone who builds their digital résumé and starts applying for jobs they didn’t even see before. Those changes happen every day, and they have nothing to do with age. They have to do with having taken the first step.
The question is not “am I too old for this?” but “what would I like to be able to do if I knew how?”.
Your next step
Starting on your own is fine, but with support it’s easier and faster. At Somos Vos we build courses designed exactly for people starting from scratch, with in-person classes, small groups and people who explain things patiently, without making you feel lost or rushed.
If you made it this far, you’ve already taken the most important step: curiosity. Now it’s your turn to turn that desire into something concrete. Give yourself the chance to learn what you always wanted.
