Why learning technology can change your future

June 2 6 min read

Today almost everything goes through a screen. We book a medical appointment from the phone, get paid by transfer, sell on social media, study by video and communicate by messages. Digital is no longer a luxury or a hobby: it became the way daily life works. And that raises an important question: what happens to those who were left out of that world?

The world changed — and you?

That distance between those who handle technology and those who don’t is called the “digital divide.” It’s not a technical problem, it’s a problem of opportunities. Those who don’t know how to use the basic tools often end up depending on others for simple things: a relative to do the paperwork, a neighbor to top up their transit card, someone to explain how to receive a payment.

That dependency wears you down and, above all, lets opportunities slip by: jobs posted only online, government benefits managed over the internet, discounts, free training. Not knowing is not a personal failure; it’s simply something not learned yet. And everything not yet learned can be learned.

It’s not just for programmers

When people talk about “learning technology,” many imagine screens full of code and get scared. But the vast majority of useful digital skills have nothing to do with programming. They have to do with solving real-life things:

  • Selling on social media what you make or resell, and reaching customers who would otherwise never find you.
  • Building a digital résumé and applying for jobs from home.
  • Doing paperwork online without losing entire mornings in a queue.
  • Accessing government benefits, appointments and services now managed over the internet.

These are concrete, practical skills that improve your finances and your autonomy. You don’t need to become an expert: with the basics well learned, it’s enough to change your day-to-day.

It’s never too late

There’s a widespread idea that “it’s harder to learn when you’re older.” Science says otherwise: the brain keeps forming new connections throughout life. Learning something different at any age is not only possible, it’s also one of the best ways to stay active and confident.

What changes over the years is not the ability to learn, but the way. Adults learn better when the new connects with things they already know, when they see what it’s useful for and when they have a space to ask without feeling judged. That’s why the right support makes all the difference.

It’s not about starting young, it’s about starting. The best time is now.
